Doppelmayr / Salzbergbahn: New highlight for Hallstatt

The Hallstatt Salt Mine in Upper Austria is preparing for something new: From June 2026, the existing Salzberg funicular will be replaced by a state-of-the-art funicular from Garaventa. The new funicular will bring numerous advantages and set new standards not only visually but also technically.

More capacity, more comfort

The existing 24-FUL will be replaced by a more efficient 60-FUL, which will double the transport capacity to 1000 people per hour. This means shorter waiting times and more efficient transport for the many visitors who travel to the Hallstatt high valley every day to explore the oldest salt mine in the world.

Innovative design and accessibility

A particular highlight of the new funicular are the vehicles with level control, which enable barrier-free boarding and alighting. The design of the cabins by Carvatech is inspired by the structure of salt crystals and reflects the themes of salt and rock.

Comprehensive modernisation

In addition to renewing the electromechanical equipment, the entire infrastructure of the line and stations will also be modernised. This will ensure that the new funicular not only meets current requirements, but also those of the future.

This comprehensive modernisation will take the visitor experience at Hallstatt Salt Mine to a new level – for a more comfortable, faster and more impressive journey to one of Europe’s most fascinating cultural sites.

„The new funicular will delight its visitors. The cabin design, inspired by salt crystals, is a particular highlight of the new installation, as is the innovative levelling system, which will ensure a comfortable ride. We are delighted to be able to realise this unique project together with the Salzwelten“ Micheal Leithinger, Head of Sales at Carvatech
