Building the Next Era of Nevis Range Scotland

Statement:
For more than 30 years, Nevis Range has been part of the story of Highland adventure tourism. From skiing and snowboarding to mountain biking, walking, sightseeing and international events, generations of people have come to this mountain to experience something unique.

But mountains change.
Weather patterns change.
Tourism changes.

If places like Nevis Range are going to survive and thrive into the future, then we have to be willing to evolve with them.

Today, we can confirm that Nevis Range is in advanced discussions regarding significant international investment intended to secure the long-term future of the mountain and modernise how people access it for generations to come.

At the heart of that vision is a very clear understanding of the challenge facing modern snow sports at Nevis Range:

The future of snow sports at Nevis Range is not simply about snowfall. It is about access. The strongest and most reliable snow conditions are increasingly found higher on the mountain, within the main snowsports area. Much of the lower mountain infrastructure was designed for a different era, different winters and different snow lines. That is why our long-term strategy is focused on improving access to where the snow actually is.

If completed, the proposed investment would support the removal and replacement of ageing lower mountain uplift infrastructure and the development of a new uplift system connecting Top Station towards the summit snowsports area. This is about redesigning access to snow sports — not walking away from them. In fact, we believe the opposite is true.

If skiing and snowboarding are to thrive long-term at Nevis Range, then the infrastructure must evolve alongside the mountain itself. We would rather invest in getting people to the snow than manufacturing snow below it.

There is no point pretending the economics of large-scale snowmaking have worked in the way we originally hoped. Under current UK commercial electricity pricing, the cost of operating snowmaking at scale simply outweighs the level of sustainable customer return it can realistically generate. That is not a loss of belief in snow sports. It is a belief that the future must be smarter, more resilient and built around the reality of where the mountain is today. And this vision extends far beyond winter alone.

Mountain biking has been integral to the identity and success of Nevis Range for decades. The mountain has become one of the UK’s most recognised riding destinations, attracting everyone from first-time riders through to elite downhill competitors and international events.

Alongside our wider investment plans, we also intend to develop a brand-new jumps line to further enhance the riding experience at Nevis Range. Designed to bring more progression, more energy and more excitement to the mountain, the new line would build on the riding culture that has made Nevis Range such an important destination within UK mountain biking.

This is about creating a true year-round mountain destination.

A destination built around skiing, snowboarding, biking, walking, sightseeing, events, hospitality and Highland adventure experiences throughout every season. The reason we are now able to have these conversations is because Nevis Range has spent years evolving beyond the traditional model of a seasonal ski area.

Over the last decade, we have continued investing through Brexit, through COVID, through rising operational costs and through some of the most difficult economic conditions the UK tourism industry has faced in generations.

During that time, we have expanded the Base Station infrastructure, developed our hotel and visitor offering, grown international tourism relationships and introduced the Nevis Range story to entirely new global audiences.

Our activities outside Scotland — particularly through our international tourism partnerships and presence in Dubai — are now generating substantial new interest in Highland tourism from the GCC countries, North Africa and beyond. And crucially, that work is now translating into real business.

This summer, we have secured a significant volume of travel trade business from international markets, helping strengthen year-round visitor numbers and opening the door to a new generation of investors who understand the long-term value of what has been built here in Fort William over the last 30 years. These investors are not simply backing a ski slope. They are backing one of the great tourism and adventure hubs in the Highlands.

They see the value in the mountain.
They see the value in the region.
And they see the global potential of Brand Scotland.

That matters enormously.

Because when we talk about growth at Nevis Range, we are not talking about growth for the sake of profiteering. We are talking about growth that allows the business to survive, invest, employ local people, support surrounding businesses and continue giving future generations access to the mountain.

Fort William deserves ambitious tourism infrastructure.
The Highlands deserve international attention.
And Scottish mountain culture deserves long-term belief and investment.

There is still work to do, and major investment projects do not happen overnight. We hope to secure the investment required before the end of this calendar year, although major projects always involve challenges and complexities along the way.

But for the first time in a long time, there is genuine momentum behind a bold new vision for Nevis Range.

We are not standing still while the world changes around us.

We intend to build the next era of Nevis Range.
